Healing or holy wells have been used throughout time for religious as well as practical purposes. The Druids held special ceremonies at these wells. After Christianity was established, the wells were given Saints' names. But in the seventh century, the Christian church, having found that it was difficult to control worship at healing wells and springs, forbade their worshipers to hold ceremonies or prayers at these sites.[1] Like Don Juan's Toltecs,[2] the Druids viewed wells — indeed, all bodies of water — as the boundary between the other world and our world, and also as the boundary between land and sky. The Druids of Britain were surrounded by water on all sides and were aware of its power to heal or destroy. Water that bubbled to the surface was thought to have significant healing qualities. Wells were significant because of the reason they came into being and also the qualities of whatever beings caused them to appear. Objects such as rags, pins, coins, and garlands of flowers were thrown in the wells by people asking for favors.[3] One of the most revered of the ancient holy wells is to be found at Glastonbury, England. Glastonbury's Chalice Well Legend has it that the Chalice Well — which is actually two springs known as the "red" and the "white" — was built by the Druids of the Old Religion and provided a bridge between the Underworld and Upper Earth. Joseph of Arimathea is said to have hidden the Chalice, or Holy Grail — the cup that Jesus drank from at the Last Supper — in one of the springs that feeds this well. Our webmaster, Susan Barber, visited this well in Glastonbury in April 2002. She said that the Red Spring's water may be gathered free on a public lane, where it flows forth from a stone wall. Or, for a small admission fee, one may visit both the Red and the White Spring within a stone-walled compound graced by beautiful terraced gardens and shrines. At the public spring, Susan spoke with a bicyclist who had stopped to drink the water and who said he came there every day. Within the Chalice Well Gardens, the spring flows down through a series of forms into a stone receptacle in the shape of two identical, intersecting circles. This shape, when the circumferance of one circle goes through the center of the other, is found in the stonework throughout the Chalice Well Gardens. As those familiar with Sacred Geometry will know, the space between two such circles is called a vesica piscis and, by extending the arcs slightly at one end to make the "tail," it creates the form of the Christian fish — the fundamental sacred symbol of the past two thousand years. Indeed, "piscis" is the Latin word for fish. The Chalice Well's Red Spring really is reddish in color, and tastes strongly of the iron that causes this pigmentation. The iron is said to symbolize the iron nails used in the Crucifixion, while the red color symbolizes the Holy Blood. According to the Chalice Well guardians, Susan said, the Red Spring is for physical healing, and the White Spring imparts a spiritual quality. Water gushes into the Chalice Well at the rate of twenty-five thousand gallons each day. Even in times of great drought, these wells have historically continued to produce the same amount of water each day. The people of Glastonbury never go thirsty.[4] The Shrine at Lourdes History has it that the water in the Grotto at Lourdes, in southern France, began to flow when the Madonna revealed herself to a young peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous. The Madonna allegedly asked that a chapel be built on the site of the vision, and told Bernadette to drink from a fountain in the Grotto. Well, there was no fountain in the Grotto! But having faith in her vision, Bernadette dug at the spot she had "seen," and a spring began to flow. And from then until now, over a century and a half later — although the water's curative properties cannot be isolated scientifically — the water from this spring has continued to flow and to demonstrate remarkable healing powers.[5] Over a period of about five months in 1958, Bernadette saw eighteen visions of the Blessed Virgin. And after four years of investigation and study, the local Bishop of Tarbes declared "that Mary Immaculate, the Mother of God, really did appear to Bernadette Soubirous." Bernadette entered a convent where she was known as Sister Marie-Bernard. She died in 1879. Fifty-four years later, in 1933, she was canonized by Pope Pius XI at St. Peter's in Rome. During Lourdes's first eighty-nine years of existence (1858–1947), the church recognized forty-six miracle cures out of all the cases presented to it by pilgrims to the Grotto. From 1947 to the present, all claims have been investigated by a medical board, and the church receives only files of those who have passed muster with this international group of physicians. Since the medical board came into existence, nineteen more miracle cures have been recognized by the church. Each year, about five million people from all over the world visit this shrine. The Maitreya Wells There are many documented miracles associated with the sudden appearance of new sacred healing wells in far-flung places all over the world. And the appearance of these wells has been attributed to the imminent "return" to Earth of a being known as Lord Maitreya. Who is Maitreya? We cannot speak to the truth or falsity of what is said about him, but we can quote from the website devoted to his message: He has been expected for generations by all of the major religions. Christians know him as the Christ, and expect his imminent return. Jews await him as the Messiah; Hindus look for the coming of Krishna; Buddhists expect him as Maitreya Buddha; and Muslims anticipate the Imam Mahdi or Messiah. We interviewed Benjamin Creme, spokesperson for Maitreya and founder of Share International in the United Kingdom. Julia: I have read that many new holy wells have been discovered that are supposedly associated with Lord Maitreya. Can you tell us about this? Benjamin: We call them healing wells. Approximately three hundred healing wells have been created, although very few of them have actually been discovered. The wells that have been discovered are: in Tlacote, Mexico; in a Nadana village north of Delhi, India; in Germany east of Dusseldorf; in a northern Russian village; in China; and in Nairobi, Kenya. In Germany, a white light illumined the cave, and there also were small crosses of light within the glow. After analysis, the water was found to be eight percent lighter than ordinary water. Doctors have documented cures of rheumatism, muscular atrophy, migraine headaches, allergies, and psychiatric illnesses through taking the water at this well. The Tlacote well has many documented healing stories associated with it and has been called "Mexico's Lourdes." Scientists have tried to determine the source of healing in the water but have been unable to do so. The healing waters north of New Delhi in India began to gush from a formerly deserted well. It has been said that a child with polio was cured there. The water in the well in Russia began to run in the same manner. There have been reports that the well in Russia cures alcoholism. The Chinese well is said to increase youth, including bringing color back into the hair. Julia: Is there some order to the way in which the wells are found? Are certain people finding them, or are they just haphazardly "discovered"? Benjamin: They are discovered in an order decreed by Lord Maitreya. The wells are likely to be discovered by a person who is pure in heart. These people are usually fundamentalist in faith. I believe that the next well to be discovered is in San Antonio, Texas. An example of how the wells are found is the discovery of the well outside of Nairobi. There was a devout woman of Christian faith, Mary Akatsa, who did regular prayer and healing sessions. Lord Maitreya appeared at her side and he charged the water for fifteen to twenty minutes. This woman saw Maitreya as the Christ. But one's beliefs affect how one tends to see him. He appears in different guises to different groups, wearing the dress of whomever they are expecting. To the Hindus, he appears as Krishna, to the Muslims as Mohammed, to Buddhists as Buddha. In whatever form, he comes to inspire and galvanize a new brilliant civilization based on truth. Around the time that the well in Kenya was discovered, Lord Maitreya showed himself to six thousand people. He promised to return with amazing blessings. He took a ride with one of the people for about a hundred yards. Then he got out of the car, walked a short distance, and disappeared. This occurred on June 11, 1988, and was written up in the Kenya Times. There are photographs as well (see picture at left). Julia: Can you explain to me who Lord Maitreya is and your connection to him? Benjamin: Lord Maitreya is a great master. He began telepathically communicating to me in London in 1977. He says that he has come to create balance and equilibrium. He is not in his Light Body, as you have heard some masters are. His Body of Light is at rest at this time. Instead, he has self-created a physical body that he can use on our level in order to experience the things that we all experience. He appears as a man, and his physical appearance in this body began in London. He is still pure enough, even in this body, to bring in a full awareness or "enlightened consciousness." He is a teacher and a guide. He has not come to be a great leader, but rather so that his ideas will inspire people to change and bring about a new world order. He will be a teacher for all religions and people of every religion. He works with world leaders to make business connections. Heads of nations also know him. Some of these will be his followers in the time of change. The messages Maitreya will share with us will allow us to change political and economic structure. Julia: What are some of the things that Maitreya is saying? Benjamin: His ideas include overcoming the fear and hate which make war and terror. We all are connected. Hate for one person or country is really hate for our own selves. One of Maitreya's ideas is sharing. A third of the world possesses eighty-three percent of the world's resources, while twelve hundred million people live on less than a dollar a day — which I find appalling. His ideas involve sharing our grain and resources with the parts of the world that have little. He is very practical and looks at simple problems such as eating and not eating. Taking on your brother's need, for example, is one of his thoughts. He also will balance the world by sharing ideas of justice, freedom, right relationship, and the law of karma-and-rebirth. A great world change is coming as a response to humanity's request that this happen. His ideas will become more and more accepted. Julia: I understand that there will be more wells and that they will be appearing all over the world. Is that correct? Benjamin: Yes, a total of seven hundred seventy-seven (777) wells will appear all over the earth. This is what Lord Maitreya has decreed. Julia: Is there a special significance to that number 777? Benjamin: Yes, there is, but it is known only to Maitreya. I do not have an insight into that. Julia: What is the connection between Lord Maitreya and the appearance of the wells? Benjamin: The wells are given healing properties by Maitreya before he appears to a group of people in the vicinity — usually so that an association can be made between the miracle healings and his later appearance. Julia: Can you tell about the properties of the water? I know that many sources of water are very polluted. My understanding is that the wells are not polluted and are pure. Benjamin: The new healing wells have water as pure as we know water to be. I have been told that their water supplies are virtually limitless, and that the wells are embedded in rock. They have tremendous healing properties and have specific functions in relation to disease. There are those who are taking records and there are millions who have collected the water. The doctors have documented this, and there is a marvelous transformation from disease to health. The energies of the water flow on the physical plane through these wells as well as the mental and spiritual plane. Our bodies are weakened by pollution in the soil and water. The strength of the water from these wells will strengthen our bodies and purify them. Julia: Do the new wells differ in any way from other healing wells, such as Lourdes? Benjamin: Yes. Earlier wells were created through our Master Jesus Christ or the Madonna, and they do have healing properties. But even if you have had the good luck or good karma to go to Lourdes, you may or may not have had a healing. The planetary energy of the Madonna is present at Lourdes, and if you tap into the energy at your disposal there, you may be cured. But whether or not this healing takes place depends on your belief and your personal karma. But Maitreya's healing wells are created through the constellation of Aquarius. The difference is that the vibratory rate of the new wells is much higher than the other sources you mentioned. It can mitigate more karma than the wells that were created in the past. The strength and the energy of the wells are so strong that they can actually overcome someone's past karma to create tremendous healing. And I believe that the healing properties are greater because of their alignment with the constellation Aquarius. There are many documented healings and miracles all over the world. I haven't kept track of them because they are so numerous. I can tell you, though, that these wells are incredibly powerful and can bring about fantastic healing. Julia: If the water truly increases vibratory rate, then would it be possible to say that the water can increase our life span? Benjamin: Yes, it will be possible in the near future to extend our lives through the pure waters that vibrate with the constellation of Aquarius. It may be possible that we will live as masters. Our true lifetimes are supposed to be two- to three-hundred years. That should be the length of one lifetime. Julia: When will Lord Maitreya make these events occur? Benjamin: He will appear soon on national television in the United States of America. It is said that he has already accepted an opportunity to appear on one of the major networks. He will appear as an ordinary person. People will not know that he is Lord Maitreya, but his teachings will begin to reach people, and the world will begin to change. We will learn more after this event.
