When we think of animal communication, we often think of humans communicating with other animals, but sometimes it takes other forms.

My teacher from the Taos Pueblo, Cradle Flower, died recently in her 90s. She and her brother, Good Deer, were the instigators and source of my spiritual saga that began in 1970 and has continued to this minute.

My sister Nita was asked to go to the Taos Pueblo in early 1970 for a special ceremony that was being performed for me, her brother. The ceremony was held in an underground kiva by the Crystal-Fetish tribe of the Taos Pueblo, and it was created for me to "find my way."

Good Deer and Cradle Flower took a small gemstone that was green on one side and purple on the other, carved it into the image of a small deer, and they prayed into this stone so that my spiritual path would open. They then placed the little deer stone in a clay pot, half filled with white silicon sand, standing next to a beautiful quartz crystal that held the program of my unfoldment.

I had lived on the Taos Pueblo as a medicine woman and died there in the year 1890, and my two mentors were simply completing what had been preordained by the Taos tribe long ago. There were many instructions and duties that I was to perform for the tribe in this life as a white man, and this ceremony launched a lifetime of initiations and work that began with the carving of this tiny, purple and green deer figure.

I didn't know about this ceremony, as I was living in British Columbia, Canada, at the time — though I did know of my deep connection with the Taos Pueblo — but one day, as my wife and I were meditating, two very tall angels appeared to us, one green and one purple. They began by saying, "We are not separate from you. We are you."

The green angel was the spirit of the Earth, and the purple angel was the spirit of the Sun. They have guided me carefully ever since as my life has unfolded according to the instructions both Good Deer and Cradle Flower breathed into the crystal and the fetish. I love them both so much.

Years later, I was called to live with Good Deer and Cradle Flower. For fourteen years, I stayed by the Pueblo and slowly completed the instructions that I knew must be finished. I have only one more instruction to consummate and I will have completed all my tasks. This last one is a big one.

As Cradle Flower began to personally teach me, she would talk to the crows and ask one of them to come and fetch me for my lesson. I had the experience of witnessing how, on random days, a jet black crow would fly out from the Pueblo and land on the old school bus where I was living. This crow would peck on my window endlessly until I would stop what I was doing and go to Cradle Flower's house.

She would always open the door and ask me, "Did you see the crow I sent you?" After I affirmed that I had seen the crow, Cradle Flower would pull me by my arm to the room where her sacred clay pot was secretly hidden, for more lessons.

I asked her once how she got the crows to listen to her and to do her bidding. Cradle Flower just looked at me with her beautiful brown eyes and said, "I love them. We connect within our hearts."

Over twenty times, I watched as her crows came to my humble little school bus and never stopped pecking until I left the house and headed for the Pueblo.

One time, I was doing something that I could not stop, and this persistent little crow also would not stop. For over three hours it pecked at my windows, jumping from window to window and looking at me as though if I didn't get going he was going to call in the macho bird patrol.

Is this possible? It must be. I saw it happen, as I said, over twenty times. We only have to open our hearts to new (actually ancient) possibilities, and find the place within our hearts that includes all life, not just humans. And in so doing, not only will a new world unfold before our eyes, but something far greater than just communication with other species will become apparent.

Here I can only hint at what I have learned. Within the opening of our hearts to all life is the knowing of a way to connect intimately with the Creator. And from this intimacy with the Creator comes the possibility of a New Creation, a New World.

If you wish to heal the world, you can begin by opening your heart to all life everywhere.
