Ear Acupuncture In Emergency Situations

A video article from Laura Cooley

Introduction by Cal Garrison

Laura Cooley came into my life as the savior and care giver who watched over my mother during the last years of her life. Eva, my mum, and Art, my step dad, were too old to take care of themselves and because of this their house was always filled with nurses and aids and therapists who over time became part of the family.

The scene at Eva and Art's was always interesting, mainly because Laura was there introducing them to things that folks in their 90's rarely get turned on to. The other girls were good at keeping them busy, but Laura always had something special for Eva and Art to do. Sometimes she'd take Art up to her place to hang out with her dogs, just to get him out of mum's hair for a while. Other times she'd take them both out for drives in the country so they could see a little more of the world. Her respect for their years and their wisdom enlivened the evening conversations with talk of religion, philosophy, and politics; it was as if she understood these two spirits and recognized that even though their bodies were old, their souls were still very much alive and wanting to participate in life.

Whenever I would go back east for a family gathering there was usually a big hoo-doo to go to. Everyone was invited and the caregivers on duty always showed up to make sure the wheel chairs made it to the dinner table. I remember arriving late to one of these shin digs and plopping myself down next to a very hip looking woman with a weird little braid hanging down her back. I ordered a Manhattan and introduced myself to Laura, who up until that moment I had never met.

In between the filet-mignon and arguing with Art over Obama somehow or other the conversation went to acupuncture; it turned out that Laura was an acupuncturist and she had been treating Art, a 96-year-old, WWII Navy commander and die-hard Republican, for quite some time. I was impressed - by both of them. It amazed me that this crusty old dude was still willing to try anything and that this spirited woman cared enough to lead him to it.

Over time, I became friends with Laura and found out more about who she is. Aside from being a chop-wood-carry-water New England gal, with an almost missionary fervor, she wants to take acupuncture and healing out of the ivory tower and bring it down into the streets; her work at Ground Zero and New Orleans testify to this.

The "Bridges" video is an introduction to information that has already proven to be effective in situations where no other help was available. We invite you to check it out. When we saw this for the first time it hit a chord that told us, everyone needs to learn how to do this - and the good news is, anyone can. Inform yourself.

Our blessings go out to all the people who put this beautiful bridge together.
